This week, Forbes magazine named WellCare one of America’s “Best Employers for New Grads.” Each year, the magazine conducts an anonymous survey with 10,000 new or recent graduates asking them to rank their employers based on factors like workplace, professional development, working conditions, salary, diversity and whether they would recommend their employer to others.
And while it is an honor to be recognized, we know it wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and dedication of our talented team of associates.
Attracting and Retaining Top Talent: A Business Imperative
To serve WellCare’s 6.3 million members across the country, we need the best efforts and ideas from individuals of all backgrounds, cultures, orientations and perspectives. This includes Millennials and Generation Z, which according to Pew Research Center, make up more than 35% of today’s workforce.
When it comes to their employers, research shows these younger generations look beyond just salary, taking into consideration other contributing factors such as continuing education and professional development; diversity and inclusion; and corporate social responsibility. In fact, according to Gallup, 59% of Millennials say opportunities to learn and grow are extremely important to them, while another study from CONE found 64% of Millennials won’t take a job if a potential employer doesn’t have strong corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices.
In response, WellCare is focusing heavily on the following three areas:
- Professional Development & Continuing Education – From our summer internship program to continuing education – including tuition reimbursement for approved degree programs – we provide opportunities to attract and retain the best and brightest new graduates and young professionals to the managed care industry.
- Corporate Social Responsibility – We offer associates various ways to give back, including WellCare Associate Volunteer Efforts (WAVE), which are volunteer programs hosted during the work week or personal time; paid Volunteer Time Off (VTO); and a “Dollars for Doers” program, which matches volunteer hours with a cash grant to preferred nonprofits. In 2018, 76% of WellCare associates volunteered more than 40,000 hours in their local communities – more than double the national average.
- Diversity & Inclusion – We are committed to maintaining a diverse and inclusive workplace, where all ideas are welcome and associates feel comfortable bringing their true selves to work each day. We established a Diversity Council, chaired by CEO Ken Burdick, and signed the national CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion pledge joining hundreds of CEOs across the U.S. We’ve also established seven Associate Resource Groups (ARGs) and host in-person conscious inclusivity education to foster discussions around personal unconscious biases and build inclusive cultures. These efforts have helped WellCare score 100% on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2019 Corporate Equality Index and 100% on the Disability Equality Index (DEI®).
